All the light is reflected in one direction which protects the color balance from the environment's influence. A softbox is a means of obtaining even and diffused light. Such lighting is used in portrait photography (i.e. passport photos) but also in advertising photography, where the even lighting is of a paramount importance. Diffused flashlight highly reduces blown-out highlights and reflections on shiny or transparent surfaces.
